Walking the extra mile

Former Zululander Michelle van Rooyen hits the road to complete her 2000km walk for abuse awareness.

IT is not every day you find someone walking from one side of the country to the other.

But in Michelle van Rooyen’s case, it is just another day in the life of someone willing to literally go the extra mile to make a difference.

The founder and manager of 4 Love & Empowerment is making the long and difficult trek from St George’s Cathedral in Cape Town to Hluhluwe Primary School to create awareness pertaining to all forms of abuse and oppression.

By walking she also hopes to raise funds for various organisations and beneficiaries, and to donate goods to the poor along her route.

‘I am a Trinity God-ordained prophet for the nations, mother and social worker who through God’s grace and loving kindness stands in His service and is becoming the person He created me to be,’ said Michelle.

‘Abuse and oppression have become the norm all over the world.

‘People will never realise their full potential if we fail to break this abusive and oppressive cycle.’

Born in Durban in 1962, Michelle was raised on a sugarcane farm in Nyalazi.

She attended Hluhluwe Primary School and matriculated at Empangeni High in 1979.

Michelle obtained an honours degree in Social Work at the University of Pretoria and currently resides in Cape Town.

After founding the 4 Love & Empowerment walk the talk campaign, Michelle now takes part in motivational speaking, offering school support, job creation and much more.

Commencing on 25 April, Michelle reached Hluhluwe on Tuesday, 25 June but still has 100kms to go before reaching the 2 000km mark.

She is currently walking to St Lucia and plans on completing her journey on Friday, 3 July.
