Biker injured in crash with cow

Biker latest victim of cattle on Zululand roads.

THE dangers of cattle on the loose in the city was brought home with a bang when a biker smashed into a herd close to the Richards Bay CBD on Sunday evening.

According to a friend, Etienne Wiid was travelling along East Central Arterial close to the Premium Promenade intersection when he encountered the herd on the main arterial road to the airport at around 6pm.

‘I believe he saw them at the last moment and slammed on brakes, skidding into the cattle,’ said Reyno Opperman.

‘The bike then caught fire and Etienne was quite badly hurt in the collision.

‘I was told he would be taken into surgery this (Monday) afternoon to set his fractured arm and clean all the wounds.’

The incident is one of many recent close calls and the Zululand Observer has been inundated with queries as to how the situation – exacerbated by the drought and dwindling grazing land –will be handled by the city.

A municipal pound is reportedly in the offing, but until then the problem remains of stray cattle causing accidents and posing a threat to lives.
