Gustav is the boss of the lake

Check out this five-metre croc that 'owns' Lake Jozini.

THERE’S many a large crocodile in Zululand, but few can match the size and superiority of Gustav, the big daddy of crocs in Lake Jozini.

Over five metres long and around 60 years old, Gustav is named after a legendary seven-metre croc that terrorised many a person in the Congo.

While not as ill-tempered as his namesake, you wouldn’t want to get on the wrong side of this toothy reptile.

Passengers on the Shayamanzi houseboats that ply the placid waters of the lake have noted that Gustav has no fear of any boats and will swim up to them to give guests a closeup view.

He has been known to destroy pontoons or rubber ducks after guests staying at Pongola Game Reserve left sardines aboard.
