Hearty giver hits 100th mark

Zululand blood donors urged to donate blood for 67 minutes of goodwill

IN SUPPORT of Madiba Day this week, the Richards Bay Blood Donor Centre is inviting the public to use their 67 minutes of goodwill to give blood and help save a life.

Pumping up efforts ahead of the Mandela Day commemorations, local donor Kenneth Havenga gave his 100th pint of blood on Saturday and urged others to take 30 minutes out of their schedules to donate.

This Friday the centre hosts a promotion and a mobile clinic in the Boardwalk Inkwazi Shopping Centre from 9am to 4.30pm and the centre will operate on Saturday from 8.30am to 3.30pm.

The current stock level is at 3.6 days supply which is below the required five day supply to meet the demand.

Nelson Mandela Day is a philanthropic occasion that challenges people the world over and reminds them that it is ‘time to serve’ and not just on 18 July.

This would instil in blood donors a culture of making a difference throughout the year by donating blood regularly.

Although the South African National Blood Service currently collects over one million units of blood annually at its 87 fixed donor centres and through daily blood drives managed by 100 mobile teams, there are instances when they fall short of the 3 000 units of blood required to meet daily demand and this greatly impacts on the lives of patients.
