Ayabonga is star of the hockey show scooping top award

KCD Zulus player Ayabonga Sibiya awarded the accolade of Junior Men's Player of the Tournament in Pietermaritzburg

King Cetshwayo District Hockey successfully hosted the recent provincial quadrangular tournament in Pietermaritzburg, which saw plenty of excellent on-field action.

With 22 teams participating in two divisions, the KCD ‘Zulus’ were both represented in the A division.
On completion of the tournament, a gala dinner was held at Acacia Bush Lodge, where the KCD hosts facilitated the awards ceremony.

KCD Hockey chairperson Musa ‘Millo’ Xulu awarded trophies to winners of the various categories, and was proud that Zulus player Ayabonga Sibiya, a Grade 12 Felixton College learner and Empangeni club player, was awarded the accolade of Junior Men’s Player of the Tournament.

“I congratulate Ayabonga for the achievement, which is a clear display of the quality of local talent,” said Xulu.

Midlands won the Men’s A division and Kokstad won the B division, while Midlands Masters won the Ladies’ A division and Midlands Mavericks the B division.

“The tournament also served as selection for South African Country Districts, and I congratulate all players selected to represent KZN Coastal at the national tournaments,” said Xulu.

The men will be in Tzaneen from 29 June to 4 July, with the ladies playing in George from 5-12 July.

The players selected are: Men – Ayabonga Sibiya, Liam Kench, Connor Lendrum and Nathan Kriedemann; Ladies – Nthati Monyai, Daniella Burgess, Smile Sibiya and Mari-Lee Visser (captain).

An appeal has been made for funding of local players and the league. Any support can be forwarded to kcdhockey@gmail.com or contact Millo on 078 9525713
