UPDATE: Terrified educators refuse to resume classes

Gates still locked at Qantayi High School after a terrifying classroom murder.

QANTAYI High School gates in the Port Durnford area remains locked, while traumatised teachers still struggle to come to terms with the classroom terror that happened two week ago.

Sthembiso Mthembu (20) was cold bloodily shot and killed in front of his teacher and classmates by fellow pupil, Siphelele Mthethwa (22).

The young gunman used his grandfather’s weapon for the execution, after the two pupils had had an altercation over a girl the day before the shooting.

On Tuesday, educators and Department of Education officials were locked in a lengthy meeting at uMthunzi Circuit in eSikhaleni.

They raised their safety concerns to the officials, and refused to resume classes

During the meeting, teachers said the ongoing dark cloud, which includes the assassination of a principal, remains a call for concern.

‘We are doing our best to ensure the situation is back to normal. At the moment were are still meeting with everyone involved including councillors, the school governing body and teachers unions.

‘While these discussions are ongoing, it will be difficult to know when will learning and teaching resume at the school,’ said uThungulu Department of Education Director, David Chonco.

While the discussion are ongoing, pupils and teachers are still receiving trauma councilling to help them deal with the trauma.
