SAVF joins human traffic awareness campaign

Suid-Afrikaanse Vrouefederasie facilitated a workshop on the topic of human trafficking.

AWARENESS of the dangers of human trafficking is spreading rapidly with local charity organisations joining hands to educate all sectors of the community.

The SAVF (Suid-Afrikaanse Vrouefederasie) facilitated a workshop on the topic of human trafficking for purposes of sexual exploitation, bonded labour, organ trafficking and illegal adoptions at their monthly pensioner’s tea at the Richards Bay Ski Boat Club.

Local awareness campaigns are spearheaded by Pastor Caroline Pitout of Freedom Generation SA and local senior journalist and attorney Rachelle Breed, both members of the KZN Human Trafficking, Pornography, Prostitution and Brothels Task Team (HPPB) in media partnership with the Zululand Observer.

Guest speaker Breed said pensioners play a pivotal role in educating the younger generation on dangers such as exciting overseas employment opportunities, which are used to lure unsuspecting school leavers into the claws of human traffic syndicates.

Pensioners are also often aware of abuse, rape and molestation which occur between family members, but may choose to keep quiet out of fear, intimidation or dependency on perpetrators.

‘There are legal mechanisms and procedures in place to deal with such matters in confidentiality and through the correct channels.

‘Decide today to speak the truth and save a life,’ Breed said.
