Empangeni FCS voted best in KZN

At a star-studded even in Durban the unit was presented an awrd for their sterling work

THE Empangeni SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit has been voted the best FCS unit in the KZN province.

The star-studded SAPS Provincial Commissioner’s Excellence Awards was held in Umhlanga Rocks on Friday night.

Empangeni FCS commanding officer Colonel Makhosi Ncube was called up to accept the award on behalf of her unit, for their outstanding performance and high success rate in clinching convictions.

‘I am very proud of my team,’ she said.

‘Their dedication and passion for their work is amazing. They treat every victim as if they were family.

‘For this to be recognised by our commanders is a huge honour.’

There are 25 FCS units based across the province, who tackle some of the most heinous crimes reported to police.

From January to December 2015, the Empangeni FCS unit arrested 326 suspects and secured convictions for 88 suspects, with the other cases still ongoing in court.

Cases in point

Col Ncube named some of the successes of which they were particularly proud:

•In May 2015, Jabulani Dlamini (41) the ‘City Serial Rapist’ was sentenced to 126 years in prison for raping at least nine women.

•The arrest of Sandile Xulu in connection with the rape of at least five women after luring them into meetings by promising jobs. Xulu has been indicted to appear in High Court, the date still to be confirmed.

•Safely returning a two-day-old baby kidnapped in Mtunzini and arresting a suspect, as well as a three-week-old baby who was stolen from her mother in the Empangeni CBD. Both cases are still in court.

•A teacher was sentenced to two life terms in prison for raping a 13-year-old girl

•The arrest of a pastor in connection with multiple charges of rape. He would offer his victims a lift home in his car, and has been connected to the rapes with DNA evidence.

‘We will continue to push hard to secure convictions, and to keep a high standard of excellence in our work,’ said Col Ncube.

‘For now, we are just happy and proud that our work has not gone unnoticed.’
