Fallen Zululand academic remembered
Former Unizulu lecturer Professor Herbert Vilakazi lost his life after a long fight with cancer last Tuesday
CONDOLENCES have been pouring in for the Zululand academic, Professor Herbert Vilakazi (73), who died last Tuesday.
The leading South African sociologist from Nongoma area, lost his life after a long battle with cancer at Die Wilgers Life Hospital in Pretoria East, where he spent almost three months in intensive care.
Since his passing, many have remembered him as a charismatic lecturer with an infectious laugh which attracted overflowing halls of students.
The former University of Zululand (Unizulu) professor obtained his BA degree in Sociology and Anthropology from Columbia University in New York in 1966.
Two years later, he received his MA in Sociology and Education at Teacher’s College.
Thereafter, he embarked on his journey of teaching, research and writing, including doing research for the Anti-Poverty Programmes in Harlem, New York.
He produced no fewer than 400 papers, articles, chapter contributions to books and tributes to luminaries, often travelling the breadth of the world.
He also appeared on numerous radio and television shows – tackling issues of social development and education.
The known academic worked at various universities including Essex County College in USA, Transkei University, Wits University, University of Cape Town and University of Zululand.
In 1997, he joined the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) as the deputy chairperson.
He was a devoted father, eminent scholar, a charismatic teacher, author, publicist and healer.
He will be laid to rest at the Pretoria East Cemetery on Saturday.
