Voter registration dates
To vote in the elections, one must be registered as a voter.

THE first voter registration for the 2016 local government elections will take place on the weekend of 5 and 6 March.
To vote in the elections, one must be registered as a voter.
You only have to register once, but will have to re-register if you have moved, or your voting district boundaries have changed.
To register you must be a South African citizen, be at least 16 years old (but you only become eligible to vote when you turn 18) and have a green bar-coded ID book, smart-card ID or a valid Temporary Identity Certificate (TIC). No copies of these documents will be accepted.
No other forms of ID will be considered.
When and where can I register?
On the above registration dates, eligible voters will be expected to register at their nearest voting stations.
You can make an appointment to apply for registration during office hours at a local IEC office responsible for your voting district.
What happens when I apply?
• Go to your local IEC office
• Fill in an application form;
• Your identity document book is scanned, and a bar-coded sticker is pasted in your ID book or on your valid TIC. If you have a smart-card ID, the sticker will be pasted on a special form that will be given to you.
• Please note that completing the form and receiving a bar-coded sticker or receipt doesn’t mean you’re registered, it only means you’ve applied for registration. Your application must still be processed, which may take up to 7 working days.
To check your voter registration status, you can send an SMS with your ID number to 32810 (R1.00 per SMS), check your registration details online or at your voting station on 4 and 5 March. Alternatively, visit your local IEC office during office hours.
