Accommodation issues shut down Unizulu

Learning interrupted due to lack of accommodation

DAYS after the University of Zululand (Unizulu) official opening, learning was temporary interrupted at the Richards Bay Campus on Thursday morning.

Students voiced out their frustrations over unresolved accommodation issues by refusing to attend classes.

They started chanting and singing inside the campus during the early hours of the morning.

They told Eyethu Bay Watch that hundreds of students have been left without proper accommodation.

They demanded the institution come up with a quick resolution for stranded students

‘It is very difficult to attend classes while we don’t have accommodation. All we want is for the institution to consider us and start making arrangements for us,’ said one students.

Student Representative Council (SRC) president Wandile Mathebula, promptly attended to angry students.

‘We know that owing to limited accommodation other students don’t have places to stay. The institution is currently working on finding places in Richards Bay to accommodate our fellow students. It is still a major challenge but we hope it will be resolved as soon as possible,’ he said

Mathebula also confirmed that even though students were unhappy, no violent incidents were reported.

Unizulu Institutional Support Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof Neil Garrod, said a meeting was held to discuss the concerns raised.

‘When the students left the meeting there was no mention of any further interruption of classes. The SRC and the university are in constant communication on student matters,’ said Garrod.
