HAVING waited 22 years to receive the title deed to her Brackenham home, an elated Beena Ruben could not hold back her emotions when she accepted the official documents last week.
Ruben, a single amputee, was hand delivered her deed at her residence in Hedgehunt Street by Department of Human Settlements representative Leslie Joseph and eThekwini Municipal Speaker Logie Naidoo.
The 50-year-old widow lives with her daughter and survives on a disability grant.
‘While the house was in the process of being transferred, her husband died and we had to start all over again,’ said Joseph.
She received the title deeds through the Enhanced Extended Discount Benefit Scheme, which allows for people who have rented their homes for a number of years to take ownership.
Joseph said 1 836 houses have been transferred in Aquadene and Brackenham and there are only 14 houses left to be finalised.
He said his office in Brackenham has been inundated with calls about the land sales in Aquadene and Brackenham and assured applicants that the process is in motion.
‘This is a long process and various channels must be followed before it is completed.
‘Residents will be notified by the department and must be patient,’ he said.
