HUNDREDS of Zululanders joined the Walk for Water on Saturday morning to aid communities severely affected by the drought and to raise awareness of the critical scarcity of water in the region.
Participants each brought a 5-litre bottle of water as an entry fee to contribute to the distribution of water this week to desperate community members.
The event, organised by employees from Mhlathuze Water, South32, Tronox KZN Sands, Foskor, Richards Bay Coal Terminal, Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone, Royal Haskoning DHV, the City of uMhlathuze Municipality and the Zululand Observer, was officially opened by City Mayor Mduduzi Mhlongo, who did not mince his words in emphasising the need for all citizens to use water wisely.
‘The fact is that despite or our pleas and calls for responsible water usage, domestic demand has not dropped in the City,’ said Mhlongo.
‘We trust this event will bring the seriousness of the water shortage home to all our residents.’
