Pay up for new plates

Motorists might soon have to cough up for new number plates

MOTORISTS across KZN may soon have to pay up for new number plates.

This according to a decision taken by provincial government that will see the abolishing of town-specific number plates, replacing them with aluminium plates with the generic ‘ZN’ system.

In 2014, the Department of Transport in KZN applied to the national department to develop a roll-out strategy for the new plates.

This process was halted when the national department made the decision that there would be a standardisation of number plates across the country.

KZN Provincial Transport head Sibusiso Gumbi last week told members of the provincial finance portfolio committee that national department had ‘finalised technical work and was looking at the implications of the changes that had to be effected through the amendment of the National Road Traffic Act.’

Gumbi explained that owing to the national standardisation, the South African flag would now be appearing on the new number plates.

The cost of the new plates has not yet been determined and no dates have yet been announced for initial roll-out.
