Slaughter site shock

To add to the shock, a man with a panga suddenly came running out of the nearby bush chasing the parents and their two children away from the scene.

A VELDENVLEI family scouting the neighbourhood for their missing dogs on Friday afternoon, were horrified when they came across the remains of a cow at what appears to be a makeshift slaughter site.

To add to the shock, a man with a panga suddenly came running out of the nearby bush chasing the parents and their two children away from the scene.

‘We sprinted, jumped in the car and sped off,’ said Annelize Millingham.

‘Then we called the police, but the response was that this is the new South Africa and no one would come out to the scene.’

The carcass was left to rot over the weekend on the open plot between Suikerbos Street and the Mondi Forests, leaving residents in the near vicinity vexed with the accommodating stench and influx of flies until the site was finally cleared on Monday morning.

Richards Bay SPCA Inspector Wynand Strauss advised community members, as per municipal bylaws, to phone the City of uMhlathuze waste management department to remove any carcasses.

‘Please note carcass removal falls under the jurisdiction of the municipality, but the SPCA can assist with live cattle that are trapped, in distress or injured.’

To report carcasses, contact the department on 035 9075679 or 035 9075673.
