Walk for Water team bring relief

About 3 000 litres of water were handed out in the remote village that has not seen a drop of water from their taps in several months.

THANKS to the generous contributions made by the hundreds of Walk for Water participants last month, desperate Nhlangenyuke community members on Tuesday were overjoying when rushing to the distribution site to grab their share of water.

About 3 000 litres of water were handed out in the remote village that has not seen a drop of water from their taps in several months.

Cheerful ‘ngiyabonga’s’ were uttered and happy songs sung by collectors, ranging from five-year-olds to grateful gogos.

Last month’s Walk for Water event saw more than 400 Zululanders bring five-litre bottles of water as the entry fee to participate in the 3km walk in Richards Bay’s CBD, which was led by City Mayor Mduduzi Mhlongo.

It was organised by employees of Mhlathuze Water, South32, the Richards Bay Coal Terminal, Tronox KZN Sands, the Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone, uMhlathuze Municipality, Royal HaskoningDHV and the Zululand Observer.

‘We sincerely thank all the community members who took part in this great cause as well as the many sponsors who helped make it all possible,’ said Walk for Water committee chairperson Megan Govender.

Speaking for his community, Nhlangenyuke Councillor ME Mhlongo also expressed his appreciation for all the contributions.

‘So many people here can finally go home with the peace of knowing that tonight they do not have to worry about water.’
