Help pump up the blood stock

Blood stocks are at a critical low of 2.3 day supply and SANBS encourages the community to pump up their efforts and bleed for a purpose.

IN support of Nelson Mandela Day, the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is appealing to all South Africans to honour the late Nelson Mandela’s legacy and give the gift of life – blood.

On Friday, blood stocks were at a critical low of 2.3 day supply and SANBS encourages the community to pump up their efforts and bleed for a purpose.

Although SANBS currently collects over one million units of blood annually at its donor centres and through daily blood drives managed by 100 mobile teams, they still fall short of the 3 000 units of blood required to meet daily demand, and this greatly impacts on the lives of patients.

Traditionally blood reserves are low in July owing to people suffering with colds and flu and school holidays.

What better way to honour the life and spirit of a man who epitomised the precious value of life than to donate blood and save the lives of accident victims, mothers in labour, cancer patients and thousands others.

Blood donation is one of the simplest ways to make a difference to the lives of others and it is something one can continue to do every 56 days.

To become a blood donor you must be:
• Between the ages of 16 and 65
• Weigh more than 50kg
• Have eaten a good meal before donating
• Lead a sexually safe lifestyle
• Be healthy on the day of donation
