Big cleanup for eSikhaleni river
More than 200 employees of local water utility and government clear Mzingwenya River banks for Mandela Day

THE Mzingwenya River in eSikhaleni last Monday got a clean start after utility and government employees cleared the heavily polluted watercourse.
More than 200 staff members of local utility Mhlathuze Water, the uMhlathuze Municipality, Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) and community members tackled the trash in the area.
The event was led by the DWS Deputy Minister Pamela Tshwete, Chairperson of Mhlathuze Water Dudu Myeni, utility board members and eSikhaleni Ward 14 Councillor Mduduzi Khumalo.
The day started with speeches about the 67 Minutes for Mandela Day and the DWS’ rivers cleaning campaign.
Myeni said the Clear Rivers campaign aims to achieve healthy eco-systems, ensure safe, clean water supplies for the future and to meet the needs of industry and agriculture.
The campaign is linked to Nelson Mandela Month, encouraging volunteers across the country to clean rivers, wetlands, streams and other forms of freshwater eco-systems.
Tshwete urged local business and community leaders to organise events that include learning sessions about rivers and to launch ‘river health’ initiatives.
