Disorder at eSikhawini Court

When the lights finally came back on, the excitement was short-lived when more trouble emerged at the Regional Court.

PANDEMONIUM ruled at the eSikhawini Magistrate’s Court on Thursday morning when work ground to a halt because of an electricity break.

Confusion prevailed, especially since the rest of the township experienced no power disruption.

All cases had to be hastily postponed, causing further delays for awaiting trial prisoners.

When the lights finally came back on, the excitement was short-lived when more trouble emerged at the Regional Court.

The court’s stenography machine which records all court proceedings malfunctioned, meaning court proceedings could not be recorded.

Even though proceedings had to be postponed, suspects still had to appear before the court so that new dates for their next appearances could be set.

• A 44-year-old father, charged on four counts of rape, briefly came before court.

He is accused of sexually assaulting his daughter since before her teen years.

It is alleged the abuse continued for years and the victim fell pregnant four times, but had to terminate all her pregnancies.

The suspect was reported to have been caught in the act by his girlfriend, who filed a complaint with the police.

His case was set to resume on 5, 6 and 7 September when the court will hear testimony from his former girlfriend and the doctor who examined the victim.

He remains in custody.
