Zondi cracks the whip over reckless taxi drivers

Taxi drivers honoured for their hard work and dedication

‘DRIVERS who fail to obey rules have no place on our roads.’

These were the sentiments of the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) national Deputy Chairperson, Boy Zondi, in Empangeni on Sunday.

Zondi addressed hundreds of taxi drivers about road safety and the importance of commuters at the South African Taxi Industry Awards (SATIA) function at the Umfolozi Casino Resort.

‘We won’t stand for any abuse of passengers. Commuters have the right to voice their concerns in our taxis without being intimidated or abused by drivers.

‘In this industry we don’t have a place for those who don’t obey rules. Drivers must take care of their passengers and avoid accidents by being road wise,’ Zondi said.

He also condemned turf war killings.

‘Boardrooms must be used to resolve conflicts, not guns. We will be able to get more things done if we talk to each other with no violence,

‘I also plead with owners to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and have permits. Drivers must also ensure they have valid driver’s licences and permits. We must overturn the stigma attached to our industry.’

The awards acknowledged responsible and ethical drivers, marshals and taxi owners of 16 taxi associations in the region.
