Hacks for less crazy mornings

Back to school hacks

It’s 7am and it’s time for all the kids to get in the car so you can drop them off at school and still be on time for work.

You call little Jimmy…

No answer.

You peer into his room.

He’s there, sitting on the bed, staring into oblivion… still wearing his pyjamas.

You know you’re in trouble. It’s time to get some advice on easing the morning madness – but before you do that, first read these super handy hacks:

• Let everyone drink water before they go to bed. Apparently, you wake up easier in the morning if you are hydrated.

• If you feel tired in the morning, try drinking water when you wake up – you actually may be dehydrated and not sleep deprived.

• Put your alarm clock across the room and not on your bedside table, or invest in an alarm that is not easily deactivated.

• Pack suitcases and lunch boxes the night before and set up a morning ‘launch pad’ that houses everything needed to get out of the door.

• Get dressed before you wake up the kids.

• Write down the children’s morning routine. Adults are not the only ones who love ticking off lists.

• Use the microwave, oven timer or your cellphone and set a five-minute countdown to encourage slow dressers or eaters.

• Make a playlist with songs that are exactly as long as it takes to complete each task, such as brushing teeth. When the song is over, everybody knows it’s time to move on.

• The moment the children get home after school, let them take out their lunch boxes, homework and any important notes. That way they won’t stay forgotten inside their suitcases.
