Above average winter rainfall expected for Zululand region

South African Weather Service predicts 'rapid' movement towards El Niño state in next few months.

Long-term seasonal weather predictions indicate an above-average late autumn and early winter period for the Zululand region, with above average temperatures forecast for the same period.

This is according to the South African Weather Service (SAWS) Seasonal Climate Watch report covering April to August.

The report also states that, while the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (Enso) remains in a neutral state, current predictions indicate that it will ‘rapidly move towards an El Niño state within the next few months and continue to strengthen up to spring and the start of the next summer season’.

“Caution is advised, however, as the prediction skill of the Enso phenomena can be limited during the winter months, and therefore it is highly recommended to keep track of the forecasts during and after winter,” said the SAWS.

The report went on to say that eastern coastal areas, including the Zululand region, can expect above-normal rainfall for during both late autumn and winter.

“Minimum and maximum temperatures are largely expected to be above normal for most parts of South Africa during the autumn and early winter seasons.”
