Roadworks to Richards Bay port entrance near completion
John Ross Parkway and Medway intersection project to finish end August
HEAVY rains did not cause any obstacles in the road for the swift completion of the Medway expansion between the Green Africa nursery and the East Gate harbour gate entrance.
Project Engineer Rob Cowan said access to the port will only be restricted to the 3.5 meter wide carriageway until this Friday when work on the north bound tie-in at the port should be concluded.
Traffic was diverted to a newly constructed lane on 9 May.
Cowan added the culvert construction for the widening of the bridge over the Mzingazi Lake is progressing well and is now 60% complete.
‘Asphalting on the north east and south east quadrants (on Meerensee’s side) of the John Ross/Medway intersection should also be completed by this Friday.

‘Construction of the north west and south west quadrants (on Arboretum’s side) of the John Ross/Medway intersection is expected to be finalised at the end of August.
Once all the civil works are wrapped up in three months’ time, motorists will have four-lane access to enter and leave the port or the Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone’s Phase 1A industrial estate, as well as two free right turn lanes into Medway from John Ross and two lanes exiting Medway onto the John Ross Parkway.
‘Fortunately for us the rain over the last weekend did not have a major effect on the project and as such only minor delays were incurred,’ Cowan said.
