ADDRESSING an Imbizo held last week in Ntambanana, City of uMhlathuze Mayor Cllr Mduduzi Mhlongo, announced drastic measures that the city has embarked on, in its quest to better the lives of the people of Ntambanana.
Mhlongo told a packed Macekane Sports Ground that the city was in the process of building about 2 500 new houses for the people of Luwamba and Bhuchanana, saying this was part of the package that comes with being absorbed by the city.
‘When the now defunct Ntambanana Local Municipality was disbanded, there were elements of uneasiness with some rural communities, who never believed they were ever going to see development in their area.
‘When we campaigned for the Local Government Elections on 3 August, we made promises of a better life, and today we are delivering on that promise.
We are here to revive your hopes of a brighter future as well as ensuring that all that was promised, will be delivered in your lifetime.
‘Our main mission is to interact with you on issues pertaining to service delivery. This is part of the government’s commitment to ensure that councillors hold public meetings with their communities and report on all service delivery initiatives, taking place in their areas.
‘Even the ANC that deployed me to council committed itself that once we have been elected as councillors we should keep the communication with our people, listen and attend to their needs and plan them in accordance with an Integrated Development Plan (IDP) and Budget.
‘We are doing this, so that we don’t leave our people behind, but together we move the city forward,’ he said.

Killing of women and children
The Mayor also warned communities to distance themselves from the killings of women and children, which he said was at its peak.
‘We urge you to remain vigilant and form partnerships with the police, traditional leaders, councillors, ward committee members, Operation Sukuma Sakhe and other law enforcement agencies, to root out any criminal elements in our communities,’ he said.
He also announced the installation of High Mast Lights in Ward 31 and Ward 32 in Macekane. He said the project, once completed will cost the municipality about R3,4-million.
‘The city is in process of renovating other community structures such as Mancence Community Hall in Ward 33. About R2,8-million has been set aside for the project. We have also set aside about R2,8-million for both Bambanani Crèche in Ward 31 and Ndondwane Crèche in Ward 32.’
Mhlongo also handed over 100 water wheelbarrows to Ntambanana community members.
