ANC condemns IFP’s violent behaviour
IFP disturbed the by-election process that took place in Ward 7 in Pongola, when they blocked the entrances to voting stations

THE African National Congress (ANC) in KZN condemned the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) for
disturbing the by-election process taking place in Ward 7 in Pongola, when they blocked the entrances to voting stations.
This hindered Transport, Community and Liaison MEC Mxolisi Kaunda from fulfilling his obligation to monitor the by-election at KwaNtshangase Tribal Court.
This unconstitutional behaviour by the IFP supporters slowed the voting process and created high levels of tension.
The incidents occurred while voting was in progress, which disrupted eligible voters. The by-election in Ward 7 followed the brutal murder of ward councillor Mbhekiseni ‘Pat’ Khumalo,in December 2016.
Khumalo was shot and killed at his house by unknown assailants who pretended to be residents needing assistance. Calling for political tolerance in the ward, the ANC said the country’s constitution makes provision for multiparty democracy and protects freedom of speech and association.
