Sanitation project underway in uMlalazi

King Cetshwayo addresses sanitation backlog in uMlalazi

THE King Cetshwayo District Municipality has launched a R32-million sanitation project in ward 16 of the uMlalazi Municipality.

The construction of the 500 VIP double pit units will be handled by Sanoqwabe Consultants.

The contract started on 1 August and the expected completion date is 31 May next year.

It is estimated that uMalazi has a backlog of 9 600 households requiring sanitation in five wards.

The backlog will be reduced in a phased approach, where a minimum of 350 units will be constructed per ward from the 2017/18 budget allocation.

A total of 1 700 households will be assisted this financial year.

As part of local community development, the implementation strategy includes the transportation of materials from the storing site to each household by local contractors.

Eight local contractors are to be appointed for the construction of toilets.

The sub-contractors will be given a basic on the-job training on supervision and project management.

All labour will be sourced locally and they will receive basic training on building and bricklaying.
