Want to make a difference in the world? Donate blood!
There are always people in need of blood, and you could help save their lives by becoming a blood donor.
Donating blood is good for you too!
• It is good for your heart. Blood donation reduces your blood viscosity (how thick and sticky your blood is), making it easier on the arteries.
• Blood donation reduces the risk of getting a heart attack or stroke. It has been found that regular blood donors have an up to 88% lower risk of a heart attack than those who do not donate.
• It can reduce the risk of cancer. By giving blood, you reduce the iron in your body. Iron is linked to increased free-radical damage in the body and has been linked to an increased risk of cancer and aging.

• You can lose weight. Every time you donate blood, you burn roughly the same amount of calories that you’d burn in an one hour workout session. That’s because the body has to work hard to produce new blood cells. This is not an advisable method of losing weight, though.

The local South African National Blood Services (SANBS) is urgently appealing to the public to donate blood, as its blood stocks are critically low.
The blood group O is especially needed.
If you visit the Richards Bay SANBS today (Tuesday) to donate blood, the SANBS will give you a free movie ticket to thank you.
Richards Bay SANBS is situated inside the Boardwalk Inkwazi Shopping Centre.
