Brackenham hit-and-run accused in court
Hit-and-run accused, Suren Singh to appear in the Richards Bay Magistrate's Court next month
As the fifth anniversary of Simone Lee Mulayen’s death approaches, the court case continues into the alleged hit-and-run that took her life in 2021.
The accused, Suren Singh, has pleaded not guilty to a charge of culpable homicide, as well as traffic-related charges involving an alleged failure to render assistance and failure to report the accident to the police within 24 hours.
The matter, which was heard in the Richards Bay Magistrate’s Court this month, was remanded to 3 November.

Simone Lee, a 22-year-old waitress from Brackenham, was found dead in a veld in November 2021 after being struck in an alleged hit-and-run incident.
Her death left her mother, Melissa Mulayen, searching for answers, with Simone Lee’s two young sons – aged two and three at the time – to care for.
Police opened a culpable homicide investigation following the discovery of the body.

A suspect was subsequently arrested and appeared in the Empangeni Magistrate’s Court, with the matter later withdrawn pending further investigation.
Undaunted, Melissa continued to raise awareness, holding annual memorials on 23 April – her daughter’s birthday – ensuring the case never went cold.
