Department promises intervention at troubled school

KZN Department of Education has promised to engage with the uMkhanyakude district education office to demand answers as to why Zwilenkosi Secondary School in the Gedleza area in Jozini, has been without mathematics and accounting teachers for almost four years

THE KZN Department of Education has promised to engage with the uMkhanyakude district education office to demand answers as to why Zwilenkosi Secondary School in the Gedleza area in Jozini, has been without mathematics and accounting teachers for almost four years.

This was the reaction of KZN education spokesperson, Muzi Mahlambi, to allegations levelled against the department by the School Governing Body Chairperson, Jabulani Nhleko.

Nhleko claims that since 2016, the department had failed to provide the school with these subject teachers and was ill-prepared to listen to the concerns of the School Governing Body.

‘The district office and senior inspectors told us they were not mandated to hire teachers.

‘Every school’s achievement is measured by their matric pass rate,’ said Nhleko.

‘Since 2016 our matric results have declined from 86% to 74%. As a school we can’t sit back and do nothing. The future of our children is at stake.

‘Our school has no proper ablution facilities, staff room or kitchen. We feel ignored and this will have a negative impact on the performance of our learners.’

Mahlambi said the allegations were new to them, and promised that his department would get to the bottom of the matter.
