BIG5 Hlabisa Mayor, Comfort Khumalo, has urged learners take their education seriously as it is the only way to overcome their economic struggles.

Khumalo addressed learners, teachers and Department of Education officials in the uMkhanyakude district during the Mayoral Excellence Awards function held at Emakhasa Special School in Hluhluwe last Wednesday.

The district’s top ten achievers received trophies and certificates.

‘Our top achiever, Mthobisi Maxase, was further awarded R20 000 to use towards his education, while the rest of our top 10 each received R10 000 to assist them to further their studies at the university of their choice,’ Khumalo said.

He also acknowledged the good performances of schools.

‘Three schools obtained 100 per cent passes. We have also taken a resolution to bail out some university students who have completed their degrees, but cannot obtain their qualifications because they owe their universities outstanding fees.

‘We did this because we believe that education is the only thing that will liberate young people from poverty,’ Khumalo said.

‘We also assist those who cannot afford university registration fees.’
