WATCH: Encourage children to read aloud

Reading aloud promotes children's potential

WORLD Read Aloud Day will be held tomorrow (Wednesday) on the international calendar and every teacher, parent and pupil should support the initiative which celebrates the power of words.

This is especially appropriate in a country in which nearly 80% of Grade 4 learners cannot read with comprehension in any language, including their home language.

Reading out loud promotes improved vocabulary, listening and hearing the word in isolation, as well as exposing the context in which that word is used, which expands children’s communication potential.

Furthermore, a well-written story can communicate coping skills to a group of learners who might be faced with a particular problem.

Reading aloud can provide a safe way of identifying emotions in the classroom or home setting, and encourage children to express their feelings during discussion time, and help to diffuse emotions.

Both in the classroom and at home, reading aloud undoubtedly promotes bonding and reinforces relationships between children and adults.

It also helps children develop their social and interpersonal skills.

Since 1979, READ Educational Trust has successfully promoted literacy across South Africa, reaching the historically disadvantaged, and making a difference in the lives of children hungry for knowledge and skills.
