VIDEO: St Catherine’s supports World Read Aloud Day

World Read Aloud Day was placed on the international calendar to celebrate the power of words, as shared audibly among people of all ages

ST CATHERINE’S School Principal Gillian Dalais has set aside 30 minutes during the school day on Wednesday as part of the World Read Aloud Day.

‘I encourage every child, no matter their age, to read out loud, as it promotes confidence and expression and assists in the comprehension and enjoyment of the written word,’ said Dalais.

‘By supporting this initiative we hope to encourage others to read and create a love for books and a thirst for knowledge.’

In South Africa, 80% of Grade 4 learners cannot read with comprehension in any language, including their home language.

World Read Aloud Day was placed on the international calendar to celebrate the power of words, as shared audibly among people of all ages.

There are a number of benefits that come from reading aloud.

Firstly, it promotes vocabulary and allows children to learn through listening and hearing the word in isolation, as well as the way the word is used in context.

This results in the expansion of their communication potential.

A well-written story can also communicate coping skills to a group of learners who might be faced with particular problems, both at school and at home.

Reading aloud can provide a safe way of identifying emotions in the classroom or home setting and encourage children to express their feelings during discussion time, which helps diffuse emotions.

Another benefit is that it promotes bonding between the children, teachers and parents.

Since 1979, the READ Educational Trust has successfully promoted literacy across South Africa; reaching the historically disadvantaged and making a difference in the lives of children hungry for knowledge and skills.
