Craving a gatsby, but you’re nowhere near the Cape? No problem – Richards Bay now has its very own gatsby specialists!

The mobile kitchen, named Aweh, produces and sells mouth-watering gatsbys, a traditional Capetonian street food that is easy on the pocket and large enough to feed a family.

For locals unfamiliar with the term ‘gatsby’, it is to Capetonians what a Bunny Chow is to us here in KZN.

A gatsby is made up of a 40cm French loaf, crammed with ‘slap chips’ (French fries), a meaty topping and spicy sauce.

This unique sandwich is so large that it is normally cut into smaller slices to feed a small family or group of friends. But if you prefer, you can also choose the smaller 20cm Gatsby.

Aweh is run by the Hendrickse family, who is originally from Cape Town.

‘Shortly after we moved to Richards Bay, my son Brent and his friend Massimo were craving a gatsby and drove around town, looking for one. This is when they realised you don’t get gatsbys in Richards Bay – this is Bunny Chow country!,’ says owner Mark Hendrickse.

Their dream of owning a gatsby outlet of their own finally came into fruition when the Hendrickses obtained a mobile unit with fully fitted kitchen. The business was also given the catchy name ‘Aweh’, a familiar greeting among Capetonians.

The Aweh team consists of Mark and Chantel Hendrickse (owners), Brent (Manager / cook), Massimo (cook) and Bianca (stock).

Currently based in Meerensee, the Aweh mobile unit delivers across the whole of Richards Bay.

Try their original polony gatsby or indulge in a Gatsby filled with steak strips, pulled chicken or the ‘vegetarian’ meatless option of ‘slap chips’ only.
