WATCH: ‘Knitwits’ call on citizens to help rebuild nation one stitch at a time

'Knitwits' from across the country are asking their communities to donate wool towards the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela campaign

‘KNITWITS’ from across the country are asking their communities to donate wool towards the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela campaign.

The campaign began in 2013 when Mandela’s former personal assistant Zelda la Grange challenged Johannesburg arts patron Carolyn Steyn to knit 67 blankets for Nelson Mandela Day.

Carolyn accepted the challenge and developed the project on a massive scale.

Over the years it has achieved four Guinness world records, and recently the blanket knitwits created the massive Bokke Blanket, celebrating the Springboks’ 2019 Rugby World Cup victory.

There are now thousands of ‘knitwits’ for Madiba, creating blankets and scarves for those in need.

Following the Covid-19 pandemic and recent looting and riots in certain provinces across the country, the organisation wants to help rebuild the country one stitch at a time.

The aim is to spread love with warm blankets and scarves across the country.

KZN ambassador Dee Bevan of Empangeni has done her fair share of charity work over the years.

Dee is known for her charity work both at St Catherine’s School as the Interact co-ordinator and in her private capacity.

‘I have been an ambassador since the early days,’ said Dee.

‘I saw a Facebook post by Brian Heathfield (one of the close Johannesburg-based associates of 67 Blankets), who I knew from when he lived in Richards Bay.

‘I love the fellowship and comradeship of like-minded people. I use my love of knitting and crocheting to keep people warm.’

KZN ambassadors are working hard to generate support, having to rely on the generosity of the public for wool donations.
