Don’t make a splash!

NATIONAL WATER WEEK

Water is an essential part of our daily lives. Although water is a renewable resource, its supply is not endless, and every increase in demand for water is putting more strain on our system. It is our responsibility as consumers to use water more wisely. By following a few simple tips for conserving water, you can help ensure the supply of water to future generations.

We must protect, conserve, and use water responsibly.

WAYS TO SAVE WATER

Kitchen

1. Only run the washing machine and dishwasher when you have a full load.

2. If you wash dishes by hand, don’t leave the water running for rinsing.

3. Rinse fruits and vegetables in a bowl of water.

4. Reuse water from washing fruits and vegetables for watering plants.

5. Do not defrost any food under running warm water.

Bathroom

1. Flush toilets only when necessary.

2. Take a shower of 5 minutes or less.

3. Turn off the water while brushing your teeth.

4. Shower instead of bathing.

5. Bath young children together.

Garden and Outdoors

1. Water your garden after 6pm so that the sun doesn’t evaporate the water.

2. Collect rainwater for watering your garden or washing your car.

3. Don’t run the hose while washing your car.

4. Plant drought-resistant trees and plants.

5. Use a broom instead of a hosepipe when cleaning driveways or patios.

Home

1. Check for leaks around the house – even a slow drip can waste 30 litres a day.

2. Never throw water away – add it to your pet’s water bowl or water a plant.

3. Look for eco-friendly products when shopping.

4. Cutting down on meat and dairy products helps conserve water.

5. Don’t mop the floor with water – use an eco-friendly waterless floor cleaner.

Other

1. Don’t buy bottled water – it takes 3 litres of water to make 1 litre of bottled water.

2. Keep a bottle of drinking water in the refrigerator.

3. Share your knowledge about saving water with your family, friends and neighbours.

4. Report public water leaks to the Municipality.

5. Don’t buy your kids water-based toys like water guns.
