SA Sports Roundup
In a week filled with sporting excitement and anticipation, nothing stood out quite like the Durban July. Indeed, ‘July Fever’ truly set in as pundits and fans flocked to a buzzing Greyville Racecourse in Durban last weekend, some in search of the glitz and glamour, and others in search of a lucrative win.
Licensed betting operators had their hands full in the build-up to the big day when the betgames began and the predictions started rolling in.
The passion and atmosphere that surrounds an event like the July is unparalleled, which is what makes this event one of the most prestigious and famous races in Africa, and why it’s described as ‘Africa’s Greatest Horseracing Event’.
Superb Kapp rescues Proteas Women at Taunton
Proteas all-rounder Marizanne Kapp made history last Monday as she recorded the highest ever Test score (150 off 213 balls) by a South African female batter. Her stand somewhat rescued her team’s first innings of their sole test match against England, with the Momentum Proteas posting a respectable 284 at the end of Day 1 at County Ground in Taunton.
It was only Kapp’s second test for her country, and her maiden test century puts her in good company with recently retired Mignon du Preez as the only two South African female batters to record ODI and test centuries.
A Monster Arrives at Kaizer Chiefs
Kaizer Chiefs have been busy since the end of the 2021/22 DSTV Premiership season. They’ve parted ways with some big names like attacking midfielder Dumisani Zuma, goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi, Serbian forward Samir Nurković, Colombian favourite Leonardo Castro, and veteran defender Daniel Cardoso, to name a few.
They’ve also added some firepower with the likes of Bafana Bafana midfielder Yusuf Maart signing a three-year deal, and a couple of youngsters with potential in Ashley du Preez and Zitha Kwinika also joining the team, among others.
Their best signing, however, may just be off the field with the addition of sports scientist and IFBB PRO Muz Maluleke, who is fresh off a second-place finish in his Pro Debut at the Expo Supershow in Brazil. The ‘Muz Monster’, as he’s affectionately known, arrives at Amakhosi in the wake of a slew of injury issues that have plagued the club, and is said to be the solution to these problems.
Fans will hope his strength and conditioning experience and knowledge can propel their beloved club back to the top.
