Sewer stench upsets Ngwelezana family’s life

The Zululand summer, and recent heatwave, has worsened the family's plight

Having lived near three exposed sewers for over 30 years, a Ngwelezana A Section resident says she has had enough.

Silver Ngubane says she has to close her windows whenever the wind blows towards her home.

The Zululand summer, and recent heatwave, has worsened the family’s plight.

“We have reported this matter to the municipality; even the previous local councillor knew about it. This is dangerous for the children,” said Ngubane.

She said the situation has now brought sickness to her family.

“I cannot even grow vegetables because the sewer overflows onto my crops – no one can eat that,” said a seemingly defeated Ngubane.

Her 29-year-old daughter, Bongeka, said every time this occurs, they can hardly breathe.

“I am not an asthmatic person, but this smell has blocked my respiratory system,” she said.

“During the recent rains, [the smell] came through from the toilets and engulfed the entire house. It is really bad at times and we hardly sleep.”

City of uMhlathuze communications manager Bongani Gina told the ZO that a team of municipal officials from the infrastructure department was on Thursday despatched to investigate the matter and give a full detailed report.

However, on Friday Ngubane said no one had come to inspect the situation.
