Electoral bill for independent candidates deemed ‘futile’

Electoral Amendment Bill deemed "A waste of ink" by the NFP

‘A waste of time and ink’ are the sentiments shared by the NFP on the recently-signed Electoral Amendment Bill.

Despite initially welcoming the the Bill which allows independent candidates to contest next year’s national and provincial elections, the NFP states the bill won’t have an impact.

An official statement released by the party reads:

“Signing into law such a Bill was a waste of ink. It’s a futile exercise that will have no bearing on the outcome of the elections, except adding a burden to the IEC but also splitting the votes.

“Based on the 2021 local government election results, it is quite clear that independents stand no chance. In fact, one can guarantee that not a single independent person will be in either the national parliament or provincial legislators.”

The NFP will travel countrywide to dissuade citizens from ‘wasting their votes’ on independents in the next election, as they believe it will split votes for smaller parties, thereby favouring the ANC.

“It is for this reason that we discourage voters against the flimsy idea that independents would make any changes.”
