‘Game changer’ for animal healthcare in South Africa
This is expected to broaden access to primary healthcare services for animal owners and small scale-farmers in rural and under-served areas

Small-scale farmers and rural dwellers are set to receive much-needed increased access to primary animal healthcare with new rules implemented for para-veterinary professionals.
New rules imply that animal health technicians and veterinary nurses can now own and open their own practices, thereby increasing access to animal health in South Africa.
The South African Veterinary Council (SAVC) has welcomed the introduction of these new rules, which came into effect in December 2022.
“We are confident this move will broaden access to primary healthcare services for animal owners and small scale-farmers in rural and under-served areas, and create much-needed new income streams for these professionals.
“It’s time for animal health technicians and other para-veterinary professionals to claim their rightful place in the sun,” said SAVC president Dr Nandipha Ndudane.
