Proposed new name for merged water boards
Merger between KZN's two water boards, Umgeni and Mhlathuze, has begun to take shape
The merger between KZN’s two water boards, Umgeni and Mhlathuze, has begun to take shape with a proposed name change to uMngeni-uThukela Water.
The new name for the planned single board to serve the whole of KZN was gazetted by Water and Sanitation Minister Senzo Mchunu, signalling a step towards the finalisation of the configuration of the two entities.

“I have approved the extension of the boundary of Umgeni Water to include Mhlathuze Water to form a single water board in KZN and the transfer of staff, assets, and liabilities to Umgeni Water.
“Umgeni Water will transform into a new entity servicing the former Mhlathuze Water area of operations in northern KZN,” said Mchunu.
The minister has called on affected parties to comment in writing on the proposed name change within 30 days.
Mchunu previously noted that the merger would enable the water boards to consolidate their assets and skills for key infrastructure development, and access to water.
While the logistics and detailed plans of the new entity are yet to be unveiled – including its management and board composition – it is reported the merger could be completed by July.
Earlier this month, Mhlathuze Water announced the appointment of a caretaker chief executive (CE) until the merger is concluded.
Vusimuzi Kubheka has taken over from interim CE Dr Simo Lushaba, who vacated the position after his contract ended in April.
Khubeka, who has years of experience in the water sector, is the group executive responsible for strategy at Rand Water, and has previously held the position of chief director in the Department of Water and Sanitation.
