Collaborative approach to fighting child abuse

The MEC called on communities to speak up for and protect children

Government must strengthen partnerships with traditional leaders, parents, faith-based organisations, police and traditional healers to better prevent cases of child abuse and neglect.

This was the stance of Social Development MEC Nonhlahla Khoza, speaking at the official launch of Child Protection Week (28 May to 4 June).

“We renew our commitment to protecting our children every day of the year. We must remain mindful of the critical role we all have in enriching the lives of our children,” said Khoza.

She called on communities to speak up for and protect children, while expressing deep concern about the increasing number of youngsters being harmed by those who should protect them.

“We extend our focus beyond one week, allowing us to engage in deeper conversations, raise awareness, and mobilise efforts to combat various forms of child abuse and neglect.

“Children are the most vulnerable members of our society, and it is our duty as adults, organisations and communities to shield them from harm.”

Khoza said the pandemic presented unique challenges, including increased risk to children’s safety because of heightened stress levels, economic hardship and social isolation.

“We must adapt our approach to address these evolving circumstances and prioritise child protection now more than ever,” she added.

“We are collaborating with local government agencies, community organisations and dedicated individuals to create impactful change and advocate for the rights of children.

“Our goal is to empower parents and caregivers by providing resources, support and guidance, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to create safe and nurturing environments for their children.”
