Warning of damaging waves, strong winds along KZN coast
These conditions have the potential to cause severe damage
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned of damaging waves and strong winds along the KZN coast from Port Edward to Richards Bay this (Wednesday) morning.
The yellow level 4 warning was issued on Tuesday, prompting the KZN Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) to issue a warning to members of the public and businesses to be cautious.

“These waves have the potential to disrupt small harbours or ports and cause damage to coastal infrastructure,” said the department in a statement.
The municipalities that may be affected are eThekwini Metro, Ray Nkonyeni, Umdoni, KwaDukuza, Mandeni, and uMlalazi.
According to the SAWS warning, waves are expected to reach heights of 4 to 5 meters, accompanied by winds ranging between 35-40 knots along the coast.

“These conditions have the potential to cause severe damage to infrastructure such as walkways, pipelines, properties, roads, and rail routes.
“Businesses and residents situated along the coast are advised to be on high alert and move to safer locations should the need arise,” said KZN Cogta.
Swimmers and beach-goers are urged to avoid entering the ocean during this period. Small vessels are advised to seek shelter in the nearest harbour.
The department has activated all disaster management teams in the affected municipalities, which will be closely monitoring the situation and respond to any eventuality.
