KZN schools’ closure directive issued

KZN schools told to release learners at 1pm amid Level 5 weather warning

The first day of school got off to a wet start in KZN, with the provincial education department issuing a directive for all education institutions to close by 1pm.

This as inclement weather takes its toll across the province.

In a statement, HoD Nkosinathi Ngcobo said the objectives for the early release of learners and officials were in the light of severe weather warnings issued by the SA Weather Service (SAWS).

“The province has experienced various challenges in recent weeks, emanating from floods, with several communities having been seriously affected, with some losing family members. Schools have been no exception in this regard,” said Ngcobo.

According to SAWS, KZN is likely to experience heavy rainfall this afternoon (Wednesday) and into tonight, with the possibility of widespread flooding.

Ngcobo said all principals are directed to release learners by 1pm.
