No sign of protest relief at uMfolozi TVET College

uMfolozi TVET students at eSikhaleni campus vow to intensify protest action amid unrelated government visit

While the administration of uMfolozi TVET College remains silent on when academic activities at its eSikhaleni campus will resume, local student leadership vowed to intensify demonstrations on Friday.

The week-long student protest began last Thursday, emanating from issues related to NSFAS and a lack of textbooks.

Speaking to the Zululand Observer this morning, eSikhaleni campus Local Student Representative Council (LSRC) chairperson Mondli Zungu said they want to get the attention of Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure Sihle Zikalala, who will be at the college today on a different government assignment.

“We hope to engage him as someone who sits in the cabinet so he can convey our plight,” said Zungu.

Yesterday, Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation Dr Blade Nzimande said he was deeply disturbed by the recurring non-payment of student allowances by the NSFAS.

To address this, Nzimande, supported by the department, has instructed NSFAS to establish a task team to visit TVET colleges and universities.
