WATCH: Zamimpilo committee celebrates helping hand

Zamimpilo Market committee chairperson Olga Zungu sang with joy on Thursday as uMkhanyakude District Mayor Siphile Mdaka kept his promise to provide a helping hand to market sellers who were gutted by the fire that razed their stalls last week.

Mdaka was accompanied by some members of the district council, councillors from Mtubatuba Municipality, officials from the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) and the CEO of the district’s uMhlosinga Development Agency, Thembisile Khumalo.

Among the relief to be provided by the district municipality is a temporary structure that will be constructed for the remaining period of revamp at the market.

Zungu said on the unfortunate morning of last week’s fire it was as if death had struck as market sellers cried out to God, watching the blaze burn their livelihoods.

Zungu thanked God for the likes of Mdaka, Khumalo and Cogta, who have ‘defeated Satan’s plan’ because this assistance would turn things around.

Mdaka said Zungu is a representative of women from eMfekayi and across the country who work hard for their families.

“We are who we are today because of you mothers, because of the likes of yourself who work here at Zamimpilo,” said Mdaka.

He said the market has an extensive history and is known across the country as it is situated along the N2, with numerous tourists passing by and purchasing from the sellers.

The market is under revamp after the development agency welcomed a R6-million injection into its coffers from Cogta late last year.
