Statistics reveal KZN has the highest number of child rape, assault and abuse cases in South Africa
The gap between the number of child rape, assault and abuse cases being reported, arrests made and the number of perpetrators facing trial is a clear indication that not enough is being done to protect the most vulnerable members of our society.
This was the sentiment of Shontel de Boer, DA spokesperson on social development, commenting on the recent release of child rape statistics in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).
As the country is about to go into the annual 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, the statistics reveal KZN has the highest number of child rape, assault and abuse cases in South Africa.
In response, the DA in KZN has called on provincial government leaders, including KZN Premier Thami Ntuli and Social Development MEC Mbali Shinga to urgently prioritise the protection of the province’s children.
According to the figures, 18 108 of these crimes against children were reported in KZN in 2022/23.
This while, according to the reply to a DA parliamentary question, more than 106 000 rape cases involving children were reported over the past six financial years in South Africa.
“The sad and shocking reality is that our children are not safe,” said De Boer.
“Of particular concern is the fact that, despite 18 108 cases being reported to date, 10 435 suspects have been arrested while only 471 are facing trial.
“Children are our future leaders. Yet, instead of helping them grow and prosper, many are subject to these horrific crimes.”
De Boer said government needs to provide more programmes, including public-private partnerships and NGOs, if there is to be any impact on eliminating the scourge.
She also called on parents to listen to their children if they complain of abuse.
