Democratic Alliance (DA) councillors in Ulundi demand 'full scale investigation' into theft of municipal asset

AFTER having learnt about the saga of the missing grader at a Ulundi municipal council meeting on Tuesday, DA councillors at the municipality are demanding answers.

Stolen on 11 October, allegedly from outside a ward councillor’s home in eNhlungwane outside Ulundi, the grader was recovered at KwaMashu Men’s Hostel in Durban on Friday.

“We were told that a suspect went to the house and pretended to be a municipal employee, saying he was sent to collect the grader,” said Cllr Thami Zungu, adding that the DA was demanding to know why State property was parked at a councillor’s home.

Zungu also said the party is calling for clarity on how many municipal vehicles were stolen between January 2021 and July 2024.

“This grader, like any other municipal asset, belongs to the people of Ulundi, and therefore the municipality has a responsibility to safeguard such assets,” he said.

Ulundi Municipality spokesperson Cebo Buthelezi confirmed that the grader in question was recovered in KwaMashu near Durban.

“We extend our gratitude to all individuals and teams who worked tirelessly to ensure this vital municipal asset was recovered,” said Buthelezi, urging law enforcement to ensure those responsible are brought to book.
