With the number of people expected to increase at public swimming pools and bathing beaches over the festive season, the City of uMhlathuze urges residents and holidaymakers to be on high alert and adhere to rules at each facility.
This follows recent drownings at the Bay Hall area as well as at Empangeni and Meerensee swimming pools.
The municipality has eight public swimming pools and two bathing beaches, all operated under strict rules.
“The two bathing beaches, namely Newark and Alkantstrand, are recognised and safeguarded by shark nets and drum lines,” reads the city’s statement.
“During the festive season from 1 December to 31 January, beaches operate from 7am to 6pm.
“It is important to note that Bay Hall and Palm Beach are not recognised as bathing areas and therefore swimming is strictly prohibited.
“Furthermore, Alkantstrand is closed until 14 December as Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) is dredging and rehabilitating the beach.
“Newark is open for bathing and is patrolled by the city’s lifeguards. Therefore, patrons are encouraged to utilise this beach for now.”
