Tourism sector beautifies Pelican Island
300 bags of litter cleared in a bid to keep Pelican Island clean

To maintain the city’s beauty and attract more visitors to the area, uMhlathuze Community Tourism Organisation (uCTO) recently led a massive clean-up campaign at Pelican Island.
Members were joined by many locals who wanted to make a difference by picking up discarded litter to ensure ‘responsible tourism’. They collected 300 refuse bags full of litter.

The group was also joined by the Sizzle City Tourism Business Community, local private sector, government and international organisations such as German Co-operation (GIZ) which runs a climate change campaign called ‘Cities Adapt’.
PTA Petroleum donated 20 drums to be used as public bins, which will be distributed at all recreational spaces in the beach area.

City of uMhlathuze Deputy Mayor Christo Botha and other community leaders also joined the campaign.
