Cops, private field rangers recover homemade rifles

Four suspects arrested in police sting operation, homemade weapons seized

AN operation conducted by the police and private field rangers yielded positive results last week, leading to the arrest of four suspects for the unlawful possession of homemade rifles and ammunition.

Acting uMkhanyakude District commissioner Brigadier Jeros Thango applauded the collaborative work done by the police and field rangers, resulting in the arrest of Sphamandla Mhlongo (37), Senzo Khanyile (41), Mbuyiseni Ncanana (39) and Bheki Gumede (45) for unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.

Thango said the sting operation was conducted on 11 March when police went to search various residences at Mnqobokazi in Hluhluwe. During the operation, police recovered four homemade rifles and several rounds of ammunition.

“All four suspects appeared before the Hluhluwe Magistrate’s Court on 12 March and were all remanded in custody for a formal bail application,” said Thango.
